About NPHRRLC
Nekemte Public Health Research & Referral Laboratory Center (NPHRRLC) is a regional public health referral laboratory located in Nekemte Town, West Oromia Region, Ethiopia. The laboratory provides specialized diagnostic, referral, research, and surveillance services that strengthen disease prevention, outbreak response, and evidence-based public health decision-making.
Serving an estimated population of more than 16 million people across western Oromia, NPHRRL collaborates with hospitals, health centers, universities, government institutions, and development partners to improve laboratory quality, expand diagnostic capacity, and strengthen Ethiopia’s public health laboratory system.

Organizational Structure
Core Functions
Laboratory Diagnostic Services
Providing specialized diagnostic testing to support disease diagnosis, patient management, public health surveillance, and the detection of priority diseases.
Referral Laboratory Services
Performing advanced laboratory investigations for specimens referred from hospitals, health centers, and other health facilities across western Oromia and beyond, as appropriate.
Public Health Research
Conducting operational and collaborative research that supports evidence-based healthcare and public health policy.
Disease Surveillance
Supporting laboratory confirmation, disease monitoring, outbreak detection, and national surveillance programs.
Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM)
Supporting public health emergency preparedness and response through laboratory investigations, outbreak-related diagnostic testing, specimen management, and timely reporting in collaboration with relevant health institutions.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Supporting the continuous professional development of healthcare and laboratory professionals through training, mentorship, coaching, supportive supervision, and technical guidance.
External Quality Assessment (EQA)
Supporting the assessment and improvement of laboratory testing performance through proficiency testing, performance evaluation, feedback, technical support, and quality improvement activities.
Community Service
Contributing to community health through public health education, laboratory-related technical support, community engagement, and collaborative activities that address local health priorities.
